About

My name is Chris Caulder. I live in the Philadelphia area.

I’ve been in a million bands (well, five) during my lifetime. Over the years, I’ve taught myself how to record at home (mostly from trial and error, as the internet wasn’t really around when I started), and I also taught myself music theory and songwriting… I’d like to think I learned a few good tips along the way, and I’d love to share them with you, with this blog.

If you’re sitting there wondering, “who the fuck is this guy?!” and are ultimately looking for credentials…

– my former trip-hop project Beauty’s Confusion has 80,000+ fans on last.fm/Spotify on average (over 5,500 monthly listeners and over 650 followers on Spotify) and we’ve sold thousands of CDs (both physical and album downloads) since 2003. The album “Breathe In” was written and recorded in my bedroom. You can stream it on Spotify, and also buy it on itunes (and I’d love it if you did both). 🙂 A quick google search of the words “Beauty’s Confusion” yields a ton of results. We were shown a lot of love from fans worldwide during our time together (and people still email me about the music we’ve done)… even though we were a blip on the American trip-hop radar (we formed in 2001 and broke up in 2007).

– my first band, Down Inside, a rapmetal/funk band similar to Phunk Junkeez/Shootyz Groove/Stuck Mojo was pretty popular in the 90s, down in Southwest Florida where I (and the band) used to live. During our career, we almost got signed to Arista Records (Usher, Sarah McLachlan), and opened for many bands including Zebrahead, Shuvel, Overkill, Stuck Mojo, and even GWAR. We sold a few thousand demo tapes (yes, CASSETTES!) as well as a few thousand copies of our first (and only) CD, “Emergency Broadkast” (1999). If you dig around a bit, you can grab all of our recordings (from 1996-2000) completely for free.

– I’ve done a lot more stuff outside of those two bands… you might have heard my music in a few indie films, and in the background of a few documentaries. And hell, even an old Xbox360 game called FULL AUTO.

I’m not done yet, musically… I’m just getting started. Thanks for checking out this blog. 🙂

  1. Hey,
Came across your blog during a search on Behringer MS-16s. Thanks for putting together that list of budget setup requirements – too often on forums if you go asking for opinions on entry level equipment you get a lot of snobbery – obviously spending hundreds will (probably) produce better sounding results, but for someone recording for kicks, as a hobby, in a badly treated room, heard by a handful of friends on ipods, just the getting things done is enough to start with! I’m in the market for new speakers so your advice/opinion was taken on board. I also agree with you on the Tascam us122 and Sennheiser hd202 – I have used both and think they offer fantastic value for money. Was glad to see there is a workaround for the nanokontrol in Reaper, thats on my “later this year” list although in the meantime setting up keyboard shortcuts to mute/solo individual tracks is the next thing to explore.

Anyway, thanks for taking the time to share your relatable expertise in a field full of think-they-know-it-alls.

  2. Thank you, Lewis. I’m glad you find the blog helpful. Although I can be somewhat of a snob when it comes to music taste (though not at all, considering I still love Huey Lewis and the News, 80s hair metal and power ballads, and obscure indie folk all the same)…. I definitely try to be as helpful as I can, sharing the knowledge I’ve learned along the way.

More to come… I’d love to update this blog more and more, but sometimes there just aren’t enough hours in the day..
